Two brothers from Mayfield Secondary School, John and Matthew Milkovich, initially created a respirator using household items for their parents who are healthcare workers to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Now, they are on the verge of mass-producing their design for hospitals in Hamilton, City of Burlington and others.
Liburdi Group of Companies teamed up with St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton to 3D-print 20 adapter tubes to make the Milkovick brothers' respirator. Health-care sectors across North America have also reached out for the prototype.
Next year, John will be accompanied by his brother Matthew in the integrated biomedical engineering and health sciences program at McMaster University.
