End-of-Year Message from Supervisor and Interim Director of Education
Dear Peel District School Board Staff, Students and Families,
As many of you begin your Summer Break, we wanted to take the opportunity to wish you a well-deserved holiday. And to those who will be working to prepare for reopening, our immense gratitude. Whatever your plans, we hope that all of you have the opportunity to re-energize and connect more closely with your loved ones.
We fully recognize that these are unprecedented and challenging times globally and locally. We also recognize how diligently all of you have worked throughout the year, and especially during the last few months. Thank you for your ongoing patience, understanding and grace. Your extraordinary efforts are appreciated.
Reopening plans for the 2020-21 school year
We don't yet know what the new school year will look like, and like all school boards, we are in the process of planning for multiple scenarios. Over the next few weeks, Peel District School Board staff, in collaboration with neighbouring school boards and education partners (ie. our employee unions, federations and associations), will create plans to support the safe reopening of schools for the 2020-21 school year.
Staff will also be working to address the Minister of Education's directives that came out of the Ministry of Education's Review of the Peel board. It remains a key priority for us to work to eliminate anti-Black racism and all forms of discrimination in the Peel board.
We ask that you stay connected over the summer and look for updates from us, which we will share as reopening plans are finalized. Information will be shared on www.peelschools.org, school websites, social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter), and will be emailed directly to staff and families. You can expect to hear from us by mid-August, as we understand that is when the Ministry of Education will provide us with a clearer sense of what we are heading back to. Those connected to balanced calendar schools that are scheduled to open in early August will receive information sooner.
Summer supports and learning opportunities
Through Ministry of Education funding, we are able to provide short-term social work and psychology support to Peel board students and parents/caregivers between July 13 and Aug. 28, 2020. Parents/caregivers and students can access these supports if they want to get information, consult or receive brief counselling around any mental health and well-being concern, such as struggling with a child who is not sleeping, mood difficulties, behaviour concerns or other related concerns—particularly if there are challenges that may affect a child's transition back to school.
Staff will be available Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please note that this is not an emergency crisis support service. If students are in crisis, please call the Peel Children's Centre Crisis Response Team, available 24/7, at 416-410-8615.
If students and/or parents/caregivers would like to speak to a social worker or a psychology staff member, please call 905-890-1010 ext. 2608 or email [email protected]. Please note that messages will not be picked up until July 13, 2020.
Additional online learning and other resources to support elementary, secondary and Peel Alternative School students will be available this summer. A transition support program for students with special education needs will also run during the last two weeks of August. To learn more about these opportunities visit this website.
A reminder that you can also access a number of resources to help support student, parent/guardian and staff mental health on our website. For a comprehensive list of supports available in the community, including mental health, food, financial and shelter information, view the resource created by the Peel board's Social Work Department.
To our graduating students and their families, and to those who are moving outside of Peel, we wish you well in all of your future endeavours. To those returning in the new school year, we look forward to welcoming you back to safe and caring spaces.
Enjoy the summer and stay safe.
Peel District School Board Supervisor
