This is an important labour update for families with secondary (9-12) students. For labour updates impacting elementary schools, visit www.peelschools.org/labour.
The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) has announced a one-day strike on Feb. 13, 2020, that will impact Peel District School Board secondary schools.
Secondary teachers and other support staff who are OSSTF members play an important role in keeping schools running smoothly and safely. Because student safety is a top priority and cannot be ensured during an OSSTF strike, if the strike takes place,
all Peel board secondary schools will be closed to grade 9 to 12 students on Feb. 13, 2020. You do not need to report your teen's absence. This will be done for you.
If the one-day strike happens, in addition to secondary schools being closed, the following programs will also be affected on Feb. 13, 2020:
- Night School will be cancelled.
- All school field trips and extracurricular activities will not take place.
- All Co-op placements, including those taking place off school property, will be cancelled.
- Dual Credit programming will continue.
Students in Dual Credit programs are to report to their college locations, as previously scheduled.
If an agreement is reached prior to this date, we will communicate with families. As changes in strike action can happen at any time, it is important that you stay connected:
- Visit the Peel board
- Follow the Peel board on
@PeelSchools on Twitter and/or like our page on
- Subscribe to your
school's website—look for "Sign up for school news" on the home page.
- Watch for updates on
local news outlets—television, radio, newspaper.
We ask for your ongoing patience and understanding during this legal job action. Staff remain committed to the success and well-being of your teen. Like you, we hope for a swift resolution to the education challenges we are currently facing in Ontario.
