Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) members will be engaged in strike action in public school boards across Ontario this week and next, unless progress is made at the central bargaining table. The Peel District School Board is affected by this announcement. As a result, all Peel board elementary schools will be closed to kindergarten to grade 8 students on Jan. 31, Feb. 4 and Feb. 6, 2020.
Peel District School Board elementary teachers play an important role in keeping schools running smoothly and safely. Because student safety is a top priority and cannot be ensured during ETFO strikes, the Peel board has determined that if strikes take place, all elementary schools will be closed to kindergarten to grade 8 students on Jan. 31, Feb. 4 and Feb. 6, 2020. You do not need to report your child's absence.
This will be done for you.
As per our Ministry-approved school year calendar, our Professional Learning (PL) Day on Feb. 7, 2020, is continuing for both elementary and secondary schools. As with other scheduled PL days, schools will be closed to elementary and secondary students on this day. Teachers will be engaged in self-directed professional learning at their work sites.
Yesterday, ETFO also announced that, beginning Feb. 3, 2020, its members will not participate in extracurricular activities, unless progress is made in negotiations.
Elementary schools will communicate with affected students directly with regards to postponements or cancellations.
Please note the following for Jan. 31, Feb. 4 and Feb. 6, 2020:
- Full-day child care programs (i.e. infant, toddler and preschool programs) will run.
- Before- and after-school programs are not operated by the Peel board. Some providers will run full-day programs for students who are currently enrolled in before- and after-school programs, as they would on PA Days. However, some providers will not be able to run programs. Please check with your child care provider directly.
- EarlyOn/Child & Family Learning Centres (CFLC) programs hosted in elementary schools will not be open.
- Evening permits will continue as usual in both elementary and secondary schools.
