Peel board enters into partnership agreement with Football North to establish soccer academy program

Soccer North to open at Clarkson Secondary School in September 2017

The Peel District School Board will enter into a partnership agreement with Football North Inc. to establish a soccer academy program, Soccer North, at Clarkson Secondary School, effective September 2017. Academy programs are geared towards student athletes who train 12 months of the year in their particular sport. In its inaugural year, it is expected that between 20 to 30 students, in grades 9 to 12, will be members of the program.

"Given the success of the Football North prep program at Clarkson this year, we felt it was worth pursuing other programs that offered similar opportunities for student athletes," says Poleen Grewal, superintendent of curriculum and instruction support services. "We're committed to ensuring students receive high-quality education while achieving their personal goals, so we're excited to partner with Football North to bring Soccer North to Clarkson."

Soccer North will be coached and staffed by employees of Soccer North and Wolves North American Academy (an affiliate of Wolves Academy England), and will not compete in any Region of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association (ROPSSAA) sanctioned games. Players living in the Clarkson school boundary will continue to field a school team separate from the academy team.

The vision of Soccer North is to change the way young players are developed in North America and to provide young players with positive learning experiences that foster a love of the game and facilitate opportunities to develop their talent to each individual's greatest potential. Notes Lee Barette, president of Football North Inc., "We are very excited to introduce Soccer North to Clarkson Secondary School. The program will leverage the existing academic support systems (academic advisor, study hall and specialized support), with the elite strength, conditioning and nutrition programs currently provided to our athletes. By matching the current excellence with the elite soccer coaching from the Wolves North American Academy, we believe this program will be unmatched in the area."

High school soccer players from around the Golden Horseshoe and the Greater Toronto Area, who are selected by Soccer North to be part of the program, will be registered students at Clarkson and expected to meet the full academic requirements in their chosen courses of study and adhere to Clarkson's Code of Conduct. Student athletes are not required to give up any club or academy affiliation to participate in Soccer North.

Applications to the Soccer North academy program are not being accepted through the Peel board or through Clarkson. Families/Players must contact Football North Inc. directly to learn more about their recruitment process, which they run independently.
