Peel board kicks off United Way campaign
 
The Peel board's United Way Giving Day will be held on Oct. 21. United Way chair Nina Jaiswal, principal at Ruth Thompson Middle School, presented the 2014-15 campaign plan to the board.
 
The board acknowledged the hard work and effort that is put in by the Peel board’s volunteer United Way committee. This year, the board's goal is to raise $300,000. Board recognizes United Achievers Scholarship recipients
 
Trustees congratulated nine Peel graduates who were selected by the United Achievers Club of Brampton to receive scholarships in recognition of their academic achievement and their dedicated service to the community. The following former students were presented with $1,000 scholarships during an awards event on September 20, 2014:

Peel board recognizes Teacher Recognition Day on Oct. 5
 
The board formally acknowledged that Oct. 5 be adopted as Teacher Recognition Day in Peel. Formally declared 'United Nations World Teachers' Day' the Peel board highlights this day with the following formal proclamation:
 
"Whereas October 5 is United Nations World Teachers' Day; and whereas Peel District School Board trustees unanimously proclaimed October 5 as Teacher Recognition Day in Peel; and whereas Peel schools play a pivotal role in shaping the future for students; and whereas Peel students benefit every day from the efforts of Peel staff; and whereas Peel schools and learning centres stand for educational excellence, thanks to the work done by Peel staff; and whereas Peel staff, through their contribution to the education of young people, play a major role in our development as a community, province and nation – Be it resolved that Teacher Recognition Day is our way of saying well done and thank you."
 
Schools and parents across the Peel board will participate in various activities to acknowledge teachers' contributions on this day.


Board appoints trustees to Budget Development Committee
 
Trustees Stan Cameron, David Green and Sue Lawton were appointed to the board’s Budget Development Committee. The committee will be comprised of the chair and vice-chair of the Board, three trustees, staff from the Director's Office, three superintendents (1 north, 1 south and 1 central); a secondary school principal representative, an elementary school principal representative and Finance Support Services staff.
The mandate of the committee is to identify possible cost-saving measures for the 2015-16 budget and future budgets. The recommendations from this committee will be discussed and reviewed at Leadership Council and brought to Trustee Budget Information Sessions through the budget process.

The following elementary principal assignment will be effective October 14, 2014:

Liz Cook from principal at Fairlawn Public School to School Support Officer (Elementary), Leadership Development and School Support Services

The following elementary principal appointment will be effective October 14, 2014:

Marie Casciato from vice-principal at Allan Drive Middle School to principal at Fairlawn Public School

The following secondary principal assignments will be effective January 30, 2015:

Lawrence DeMaeyer from principal at Central Peel Secondary School to School Support Officer (Secondary), Leadership Development and School Support Services

John Colton from principal at Judith Nyman Secondary School to principal at Central Peel Secondary School

The following secondary principal appointment will be effective January 30, 2015:

Susan MacLellan from vice-principal at Heart Lake Secondary School to principal at Judith Nyman Secondary School

The following secondary vice-principal appointment will be effective January 30, 2015:

Shakti Patel from Brookside Secondary School/Centre for Individual Studies, Northumberland, Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board to vice-principal at Heart Lake Secondary School

Retirements

Trustees recognized the contributions and years of service of the following staff who have/are retiring:
