G.W. Finlayson Scholarship award winners share professional learning with board

G.W. Finlayson Scholarship award recipients, Jennifer Jurisevic and Ashley Squire-Smith, were congratulated by the board for their contributions. Both teachers shared their professional learning with the board.

Board congratulates Peel Alternative Programs principal for Outstanding Principal of 2014 honour

Sharon Stevens-Lay, principal of Peel Alternative Programs, was congratulated for the recognition of Canada’s Outstanding Principals of the Year for 2014. The award honours principals who have made a measurable difference in the lives of their students and their school communities and have contributed to making our public education system one of the best in the world. Winners were formally honoured for their contributions to public education at the Canada's Outstanding Principals Awards Gala Celebration in Toronto on Feb. 25.

Heather Deslippe awarded Helen Des Roches Starfish Award

The Peel board social work services awarded Heather Deslippe, guidance counselor and ISSP teacher at Greenbriar Middle School, with the Helen Des Roches Starfish Award, an award given annually to an individual who has made a significant difference in the lives of students. 

Peel board secondary students receive OSSTF Marion Drysdale Award

The board congratulated seven secondary students, and their teachers, whose artistic and creative talents gained recognition in the 2014 Marion Drysdale Awards competition, sponsored by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation.

Board approves naming of new schools

Trustees approved the names of three new schools:
• Countryside Village Public School, formerly known as Countryside Villages #1, located at the intersection of Wardenwood Drive and Dolbyhill Drive in Brampton
• Chris Hadfield Public School, formerly known as Dundas Fairview, located at 465 Fairview
Rd. in Mississauga
• Nelson Mandela Public School, formerly known as Fletcher's Meadow #7, located at 10125
Chinguacousy Rd. in Brampton

Board approves 2014-15 school year calendar

Trustees approved the school year calendars for 2014-15 for all schools excluding Roberta Bondar Public School, Ray Lawson Public School and Roy McMurtry School. The calendar will now be submitted to the Ministry of Education for approval. 
 
Board appoints controller of facilities and environmental support services

Trustees approved the appointment of Joe Weinberg, from superintendent of business services, District School Board of Niagara, to the position of controller of facilities and environmental support services, effective May 1, 2014.
