Briefing - February 25, 2014

Schools recognize Black History Month

Students from Cawthra Park Secondary School made a special spoken word presentation to the board in recognition of Black History Month. Schools across Peel hosted Black History Month events throughout February. In addition, more than 500 students and teachers from across Peel gathered at the HJA Brown Education Centre on Feb. 12 and 13 for the Peel District School Board’s Spotlight on Black Heritage events.

Chair provides update on Peel board’s #FixtheFormula campaign

Board chair, Janet McDougald, updated trustees on the #FixtheFormula special education funding campaign and unveiled a new campaign video.

In the video, McDougald outlined that each year the Peel District School Board provides special education to about 22,000 students.  While the board responds with the right support, the number of students with special needs, and their severity, keeps growing.  So does the shortfall in the board’s budget to serve them, due to a flawed funding formula.

Notes McDougald,“Peel board students are last of all Ontario school boards in High Needs Amount (HNA) special education funding.  The problem is clear – and so is a solution. We are asking the provincial government to fix the formula.”

Peel board trustees have taken the fix the formula message “on the road” with presentations at regional School Council meetings and to municipalities and community leaders to ask for their help to get the province to fix the formula for special education.

Letter to OPSBA expresses concerns regarding Bill 122

The Peel board will send a letter to the Ontario Public School Board Association (OPSBA) to express concerns regarding Bill 122.

Notes Janet McDougald, chair of the board, “we are concerned that Bill 122 may not pass prior to the expiration of current agreements with our employees. If this occurs, and in the absence of legislation, we anticipate that unions will want to enter into local bargaining with boards. Clearly, this would be unproductive for both sides”

Peel board approves revisions, updates to operating policies

Trustees approved revisions and updates to current operating policies. Revisions reflect current practices and changes in legislation and/or to clarify language, such as titles. All Peel board policies now include a statement of verification that the policy is aligned with and supports the board's Human Rights policy (Policy #51) and the Equity and Inclusive Education policy (Policy #54).
