Peel board recognizes Asian Heritage Month
 
Peel board schools are holding events throughout May in honour of Asian Heritage Month. In addition, more than 500 students participated in the Spotlight on Asian Heritage events at the HJA Brown Education Centre on May 7 and 8, 2013. 

Centennial Senior Public School students Amrit Bains, Tejpal Dhaliwal, Harsimran Dhugga, Jashan Kainth, Sunny Malhi and Rajan Sohal provided trustees with an overview of the month and its significance in the Peel board as it relates to the goals of diversity, equity and inclusion. The students, under the direction of teacher Satwinder Osahan, performed Gabaroo Canada De.

“As Canadians, we’re grateful for the contributions from various cultures that have made significant contributions to our country’s rich history,” says Janet McDougald, chair of the Peel board. “Our schools have and will continue to take part in numerous activities throughout the month of May to help celebrate the achievements and contributions of Asian Canadians.”

Peel board celebrates partnership with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Peel
 
Peel District School Board Chief Social Worker Jim Van Buskirk, and Shari Lynn Landanchuk, executive director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Peel, provided an update to trustees on the partnership with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Peel.

Delegations

Imran Ali delegated the board on behalf of parents of students impacted by the board’s proposal to phase out the French Immersion program at David Suzuki Secondary School.

Gail Brathwaite delegated the board on behalf of parents regarding the stress to children caused by the boundary changes that will move grade 9 French Immersion students from David Suzuki Secondary School to Brampton Centennial Secondary School.

Kay Tull Robinson delegated the board about the French Immersion program at Brampton Centennial Secondary School.

Adam Martin-Robbins delegated the board regarding busing to Caledon East Public School.

Swagata Roy delegated the board on behalf of parents of students who will no longer be bused to Barondale Public School.

Board congratulates Rick Hansen Secondary School robotics team on placing first at 2013 FIRST World Robotics Championship

Trustees congratulated Rick Hansen Secondary School’s robotics team, Theory6, on winning the 2013 FIRST World Robotics Championship for their creation Chronos. It is only the third time a Canadian team has won the trophy in this international competition. The championship was held in St. Louis, Missouri, and featured 400 teams from around the world, including 27 teams from Canada. Theory6 was established under former robotics teacher, John Hobbins, in 2003. The team includes 65 students, 25 alumni mentors, teachers, corporate mentors and more than 100 parent volunteers.

Peel board teachers receive OSSTF Excellence in Education Award

Trustees congratulate Beryl Ford Public School student on appointment to Minister of Education’s Student Advisory Council

Jay Patel, a student at Beryl Ford Public School, has been appointed to be one of 63 students who sit on the Minister of Education’s Student Advisory Council (MSAC). The council provides input from the student perspective on ministry policies, programs and practices. It also provides advice  and feedback on activities related to the ministry’s student engagement activities, and provides feedback on student-focused communication strategies and tools.

Board congratulates students on Malton Black Development Association Scholarships

In recognition for their academic achievement, outstanding service to the community and acceptance into a post-secondary institution, the following students were presented with a Malton Black Development Association Scholarship, valued at $1,000, at the organization’s 35th annual Scholarship & Recognition Awards dinner on April 6, 2013.

Peel board receives Bulldog Media Relations Award

The Peel board was selected to receive a Gold level award medal for its Stand Up for Student Mental Health Campaign in the 2013 Bulldog Media Relations Awards for Excellence in Media & Publicity Campaigns competition. Peel won in the “Best Use of Broadcast Video/Internet – Business/Consumer” category.

Peel schools honour police officers during Police Appreciation Week

The Peel board is paying tribute to police officers during Police Appreciation Week from May 5 to 11, 2013. Peel students and staff will show their appreciation for the work done by police to protect schools, homes and communities.

Board approves deferral of changes to French Immersion program at David Suzuki Secondary School

At the Regular Meeting of the Board on April 9, 2013, trustees approved a new French Immersion program at Brampton Centennial Secondary School to be phased in beginning September 2013. Trustees also approved the phasing out of the French Immersion program at David Suzuki Secondary School, effective September 2013, commencing with redirection of grade 9 French Immersion students to Brampton Centennial Secondary School.

At the May 14, 2013, Regular Meeting of the Board, trustees approved the deferral of previously approved changes to the David Suzuki Secondary School French Immersion program by one year. This means the phase out of David Suzuki’s French Immersion program and the phase in of French Immersion program at Brampton Centennial is delayed by one year.

The enrolment cap of 1,850 students at David Suzuki Secondary School, approved at the April 9, 2013 Regular Meeting of the Board, and the redirection of students in excess of 1,850 students to Brampton Centennial Secondary School remains in place.
Trustees elected to OPSBA Board of Directors
Trustees David Green and Rick Williams were elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Public School Boards' Association (OPSBA) for the 2013-14 school year. Trustees Beryl Ford and Sue Lawton were elected as alternates.

New SEAC members appointed

Lorraine Yuill has been appointed to represent the Learning Disabilities Association of Peel Region on the Special Education Advisory Committee.

Carol Ogilvie has been appointed as the alternate representative for the Learning Disabilities Association of Peel Region on the Special Education Advisory Committee.

Nancy Bratkovic has been appointed as the alternate representative for Peel Branch of Canadian Mental Health on the Special Education Advisory Committee.

Lisa Verdone has been appointed to represent The Peel Caring Network for Challenged Kids on the Special Education Advisory Committee.

Dorothy Peddie has been appointed to represent the Peel Chapter of FASworld Canada on the Special Education Advisory Committee.
