In addition, more than 500 students and teachers from across Peel gathered at the HJA Brown Education Centre on Feb. 6 and 7 for the Peel District School Board’s Spotlight on Black Heritage events. Participants took part in hands-on, interactive workshops facilitated by the Nia Centre for the Arts.

Letter to premier expresses need for new negotiation process

The Peel District School Board will send a letter to Premier Kathleen Wynne to express the need for a fair bargaining process going forward, including a new provincial discussion table (PDT) with school boards as active partners. In the letter, Peel District School Board Chair Janet McDougald explained the current PDT process has left local publically-elected school boards out of the bargaining process. McDougald insists a designative representative body of local school boards must be a party to any agreement and that no settlement can be reached unless it is signed by that designated representative body.

“As school trustees, we believe that the PDTs of the past have sometimes been willing to sacrifice the learning agenda to achieve short-term financial goals,” McDougald writes. “It cannot continue to be peace at any price.”
