MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Trustees approve use of in-year funding to keep some classrooms open during 2017-18

Trustees approved the use of up to $1 million from in-year savings and, if necessary from the uncommitted Working Fund Reserve, to provide cleaning services in a maximum of two non-funded, permanent classrooms or three in very exceptional circumstances, for the 2017-18 school year, at elementary schools that are below their Ministry Rated Capacity.

Board approves enrolment cap at Churchville Public School

Trustees approved an enrolment cap at Churchville Public School in Brampton. Effective March 10, 2017, an enrolment cap, including a maximum of seven kindergarten classes for September 2017, will be implemented. Between March 11 and June 30, 2017, new students registering in the regular track program will be re-directed to McClure Public School. New registrants in the French Immersion (FI) program will be re-directed to Ingleborough Public School, where they have the option to remain until the end of grade 8. All students, both regular track and FI, who register after June 30, 2017, will be re-directed to McClure.

Peel board writes to Minister of Education for second time to request meeting to discuss discontinuation of top-up funding

Trustees will write to the Minister of Education for a second time to request a meeting to discuss the discontinuation of top-up funding for Ontario school boards. On Oct. 14, 2016, Chair Janet McDougald wrote to Minister Mitzie Hunter to share concerns on behalf of the board about the discontinuation that has resulted in the closure of “empty” classrooms during the 2016-17 school year, and potential future music (vocal) and French elementary classroom closures during the 2017-18 school year.

Faced with a $2.8-million cut in funding from the Ministry of Education for the cleaning of schools, trustees directed Peel board administration to use in-year savings and the board’s Working Reserve Fund, if required, to prevent vocal music and French classroom closures in elementary schools this school year Noted McDougald, “Trustees’ direction of funds is not a long-term solution. For help with that permanent solution, we turn to the ministry.”

School year calendars approved for 2017-18

Trustees approved the proposed school year calendars for all schools, including Roberta Bondar Public School, Ray Lawson Public School, SouthFields Village Public School #2 and Roy McMurtry School for 2017-18. The calendars will now be submitted to the Ministry of Education for approval. The dates are not official until approved by the ministry. Tentative dates are available online (Section 9.2).
