BRIEFING - HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FEBRUARY 23, 2016
MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Peel schools celebrate Black History Month in February

Peel schools hosted Black History Month (BHM) celebrations in February to learn about and honour the rich culture, achievements and contributions of black Canadians. To celebrate centrally, the Peel board held its 12th annual Spotlight on Black Heritage events on Feb. 10 and 11, where over 500 students and educators had the opportunity to learn more about the cultural traditions and accomplishments of the black community.

Student artwork demonstrating key BHM themes are currently on display in the atrium of the HJA Brown Education Centre, located at 5650 Hurontario St. in Mississauga. Student artwork also contributed to this year's BHM poster, which was distributed to all Peel schools and work sites to be displayed in prominent areas. The poster highlights this year's BHM theme: Inspire Inclusion.

Students from Sir Isaac Brock Public School and David Suzuki Secondary School shared their learning during Black History Month at tonight’s Meeting of the Board.

School year calendars approved for 2016-17

Trustees approved the proposed school year calendars for all schools, including Roberta Bondar Public School, Ray Lawson Public School and Roy McMurtry School for 2016-17. The calendars will now be submitted to the Ministry of Education for approval. The dates are not official until approved by the ministry. Tentative dates are available online. (Section 9.4)

Trustees authorize loan from Ontario Financing Authority

Trustees approved a by-law to authorize a loan from the Ontario Financing Authority (OFA), pursuant to a loan agreement under Section 7 of Ontario Regulation 41/10. The Ministry of Education, through the OFA, is moving forward with the issuance of long-term financing to permanently finance the costs incurred with respect to the New Pupil Places (NPP) program. The Peel board will finance the NPP expenditures to August 31, 2015, in the amount of $42,512,090. Repayment of the loan will be amortized over 25 years at an interest rate of 3.242% per annum. The Peel board will receive capital program payments from the Ministry of Education to cover all interest and principal payments associated with this long-term financing.
