Hillside Senior Public School Principal Lynn Eagle and Vice-Principal, Glenn Brand, along with Teacher Paul Officer, a delegation of Grade 8 students, and parents were in attendance and were welcomed by Superintendent of Schools, Chuck Waterman.
Paul Officer provided background information about the Wapekeka First Nation Exchange. He explained that Hillside Senior students had been participating in a pen pal program with Wapekeka First Nation students for the past year, which had been initiated by a graduate teacher who accepted a temporary teaching post in Wapekeka. Paul Officer advised that a proposal was put together for special funding through the YMCA to organize a student exchange to Wapekeka First Nation. The proposal was accepted and the school received $100,000 to make the exchange possible. Parents have been involved in fundraising for the trip and the school has also received donations from corporate sponsors, as well as complimentary admission to Toronto's CN Tower and other area attractions.
Next Friday a party of 26 people will depart for Wapekeka, and 25 students from each community will participate in the exchange. Grade 6 student Kyle Crawford described some of the activities students will be involved in during their visit to Wapekeka, which include: snowshoeing, research projects, ice fishing, and tasting local fare such as caribou. Paul Officer also outlined a few of the activities planned for Wapekeka students on the return exchange, such as trips to shopping malls, Niagara Falls, and various cultural and educational facilities. The Chair presented the students with a commemorative plaque and some Peel DSB pens and pins to give to the Wapekeka students.

A Powerpoint presentation on the Peel DSB's new Human Rights campaign, "Go Beyond Words", which has been developed to inform students, staff and parents about their rights and responsibilities, was provided by Superintendent of Human Resources - Teaching Staff Services, Debra Mitchell. Superintendent Mitchell emphasized that everyone has a right be treated with respect and dignity and to be able to teach, learn and work in an in an environment that is free from discrimination and harrassment. This philosophy is reflected in the Board's policy, its commitment to the system planning for student success and the Future We Want equity initiative.
Debra Mitchell noted that there has been an enthusiastic response to the campaign already, with requests for extra copies of the brochures and posters that were produced to promote awareness. A significant part of the campaign is the availablity of information on human rights issues on the Peel DSB web site. The presentation highlighted the main components of the web site which include: a complainant's guide; resource documents for The Future We Want and the Ontario Human Rights Commission, and various links to other relevant sources of information.
