Silverthorn Public School celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008. Today, our principal and a team of dedicated teachers are fostering a positive, caring environment for Silverthorn students while promoting academic, social and physical excellence. The values of acceptance, caring and trust inspire Silverthorn students to become responsible members of the school and local/global communities. Staff and students are dedicated to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all students. Our ongoing Skills for Growing Program emphasizes the Peel board character traits and complement the anti bullying initiatives at the school.
Silverthorn is a small school, which offers the same number of extracurricular activities as many larger schools. Many clubs such as choir, yoga, arts, running, chess, dance, eco, and construction clubs enrich student learning. Each year students are offered an opportunity to explore different activities from cricket to curling to animation. This year we are involved in the Credit Valley Conservation Streams of Dreams watershed conservation awareness program.
Our school council plays an important role in student success. The parents on the school council are committed, dedicated, engaged and very involved. Many parent volunteers work hard to facilitate the All Star Readers Program, the annual fundraising Move-A-Thon, and the newly added Parent Lending Library. Parents contribute their time and support to organize and deliver Scholastic book orders and fundraising through Pizza Days. In addition, our parents involve the local community in an annual Spring Barbecue.
Our school has a strong commitment to make a difference in our local community. We have engaged all staff and students in several social justice initiatives throughout the year. We support our local communities through food drives and fundraising events for United Way. We demonstrate our caring for the environment through green practices in our school and are a certified Ontario EcoSchool.
