Welcome to PASonline (Peel Alternative School online)
PASonline provides an opportunity for high school students under the age of 21 years of age to complete courses outside of a traditional classroom setting.
Assessment and evaluation are core to the PASonline program. Regular submission of assignments, frequent contributions to online discussions and participation in group assignments are three methods that continually involve online students.
The benefits of taking PASonline courses include:
- improved communication technology knowledge and skills
- a choice in education
- continual entry to the courses from September to February
- enhanced time management skills
- independent learning opportunities
- access to courses free of timetabling and scheduling constraints
- access to a community of learners who may not be able to access courses in the traditional manner
A student taking online courses requires reliable access to a computer with Internet access. He or she also needs to commit time to complete the required work in each course.
On the homepage of our website, the current Student Handbook is displayed showing guidelines and important dates for students. Make sure your son/daughter reads this. Students should also be aware that teachers regularly use Turnitin.com to check for plagiarism in student work.
"What is the role of the parent of a PASonline student?"
Some helpful suggestions are for parents to:
- be directly involved in the daily supervision of their son/daughter's time
- assist their son/daughter with time management.
- for tests, midterms and exams, parents should ensure that their son/daughter has a private workstation where s/he can work independently and that the student is only accessing the exam and not other resources, chat rooms etc…
- establish an appropriate computer workstation that is semi-private.
- maintain communication with your child's teacher/teachers when resolving problems.
- sit with their son/daughter as s/he logs into the course and look at the Announcements and the Calendar for upcoming due dates - this can also be done through the Insight Window of our system where you can have your own login to your son/daughter's course(s)
Parents are the primary educational facilitators for their children. Parent support is a significant factor in student success with this alternative type of education.
Parents should be aware that there are people to contact for help. If you require assistance, please contact your son/daughter's teacher through the online course email. The contact information can be found in the Student Handbook distributed at the start of each term. For technical questions you can contact the PASonline
Tech Support in the course email.
