French Immersion & Extended French
Registration and Locations
IMPORTANT:
The information on this page has been revised to reflect changes to the French immersion program, as approved by trustees at the Regular Meeting of the Board on Sept. 25, 2012. No changes were made to the Extended French program.
If your child will start grade 1 or grade 7 in September 2013, the registration deadline for French immersion (FI) and extended French (EF) is 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013.
Effective September 2013, a grade 1 FI enrolment cap will be in place. This means that a specific number of spots are available for students entering grade 1 FI. The cap is set at 25 per cent of the total annual enrolment number in grade 1 FI.
There is no enrolment cap in EF. This means all students who register for the grade 7 program before the registration deadline will be admitted.
Learn about the French immersion program in our
brochure.
Lottery system - FI only
If the number of students registered by the deadline exceeds the number of spots in grade 1 FI, a lottery system will be used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program.
All students who make the registration deadline will be placed in the lottery and assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.
Students who currently (2012-13) have siblings in the elementary FI program (in grades 1 to 7) would not be included in the lottery and would be automatically registered into grade 1 FI. However, students must register by the deadline to be automatically accepted into the grade 1 FI program.
It's important to note that the grandparenting of siblings applies only to families who currently (2012-13) have children in the elementary FI program (grades 1 to 7). This means that younger siblings of students who are accepted into grade 1 FI for the 2013-14 school year and who don't currently have siblings in grades 1 to 7 FI will participate in the lottery in future years.
Students who are currently in Kindergarten FI in other school boards will not be included in the lottery. These students must also be registered by the deadline to be accepted into the grade 1 FI program.
Parents will receive letters notifying them that their children have been successfully registered in grade 1 FI OR if they have been placed on the school's waitlist by Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013. If parents have not received written confirmation of their child's spot in the FI program or place on the waitlist by the end of February, they should contact the school.
Waitlist - FI only
Students will be placed on a waitlist for grade 1 FI in the following order:
1. Peel board students who registered by the deadline, but weren't selected during the lottery process. Students will be placed in rank order, as determined by the computerized selection process.
2. Peel board students who missed the registration deadline.
3. Students who have moved to the Peel board, but have not been part of an existing FI program and missed the registration deadline.
Where to register
Parents should register their child directly at the FI or EF school their child would attend.
If your child will start grade 1 or grade 7 in September 2013, the registration deadline for FI and EF is 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013.
Students who are currently in FI in the Peel board who are moving to another school within the board do not need to re-register. Students who will transfer from comparable publicly funded FI programs outside of Peel into grade 2 to grade 12 FI also do not need to register.
Where to learn more
Plan to attend the information night at your FI or EF school at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012. Please contact your local school to confirm the time and location. Details about the information sessions will be sent home with all Year 2 Kindergarten students.
You can also call 905-890-1010 (or 1-800-668-1146) ext. 2519 to speak to the board's French as a Second Language instructional co-ordinator.
Details about the information sessions will be sent home with all Year 2 Kindergarten students.
If you are unable to attend the information session at your school, sessions will be held at the HJA Brown Education Centre, 5650 Hurontario St. (at Matheson Blvd.), Mississauga, as follows:
French immersion - Jan. 15, 2013 - 7 to 8 p.m.
Extended French - Jan. 17, 2013 - 7 to 8 p.m.
