Student
Accommodations for EQAO Assessments
Accommodations -
EQAO
- Accommodations are allowed for all provincial assessments.
Accommodations must follow EQAO guidelines to ensure the
integrity of the assessment.
- Accommodations for the grade 10 Literacy assessment are
only allowed if the accommodation(s) is indicated in the
student's Individual Education Plan.
- Accommodations for the grade 3 and grade 6 assessments of
reading, writing and mathematics are allowed for students who
have been identified by an Identification, Placement and Review
Committee or who have not been formally identified but have
special needs. Also ESL/ELD students in the early stages of
English language acquisition may be considered for
accommodations.
Modifications -
EQAO
- Modifications are not allowed to any of the EQAO
assessments
- Modifications are defined as "changes to content and to
performance criteria". Modifications are not permitted because
they would affect the validity and reliability of the
test.
This includes clarifying test questions for students by
rewording or explaining them; answering students' questions during
the test or providing additional information; and allowing
discussion prior to the performance of writing tasks.
Clarification of instructions for both the reading and the
writing components of the assessments is permitted for all
students before the commencement of the assessments. Such
clarification is not considered to be an accommodation.

Additional Information
Regarding Grade 10 Literacy Assessment
A) Students who use a computer or word processor may
check keyboarding errors or spelling but may not use any other
tool or device available in the software to respond to the test.
Tools that check grammar or create summaries are not permitted on
the test.
It will be noted on the student's Individual Student Report
(ISR) that spelling was not evaluated for students who do not
produce a written response or who use a keyboard and spell check.
This includes response formats using
- verbatim scribing
- audiotape recording for later transcription
- speech-to-text software, speech synthesizer, or
Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems
- computer or word processor with spell check
In such circumstances, the fact that a student does not receive
a score for spelling will not compromise the student's chance to
complete the test successfully.
B) Requests for special consideration of accommodations
are permitted.
Clarifications of requests for special consideration of
accommodation for 2001-2
- if the request is for more than double the time;
- if the request is for an accommodation that is included in
the student's IEP but not in the Guide for Accommodations,
Special Provisions, Deferrals, and Exemptions, and that
conforms to the definition of accommodations (on page 7 of the
guide);
There are two circumstances under which a request may be made
to the appropriate supervisory officer:
- if the request is for an accommodation that is not included
in the student's IEP (but is included in the EQAO Guide for
Accommodations, Special Provisions, Deferrals, and
Exemptions); and
- if the request for an accommodation is being made on behalf
of a student recently transferred in the school from another
jurisdiction who does not have an IEP.
