Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School students win big in Las Vegas
Three students from Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School in Brampton recently competed in the biannual Freshwood Furniture and Design Competition held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Justin Chin won a first place for his ebonized oak swivel rocker entitled Keep on Rockin’. Gurleen Singh’s upholstered bench Stasis built of tiger maple took second place in the same category. And finally, Onkar Nagra’s curvilinear table Three Way Drop made from walnut and tamo ash received third prize in the high school table category.
The $2,000 in prize money the students received brings the total to more than $12,000 in cash and prizes that Fletcher’s Meadow S.S. has won at the Freshwood event since it first began competing in 2009.
Fletcher’s Meadow is the only secondary school in Canada to ever send finalists (7) to the competition and the only secondary school in all of North America to ever win the top award, best of show. Woodworking at Fletcher’s Meadow is part of the Specialist High Skills Major Construction program.
