Applewood and Stephen Lewis students perform unique anthems at Jays game

Peel District School Board students from Applewood School and Stephen Lewis Secondary School will sing and sign both the American and Canadian national anthems during the baseball game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox at the Rogers Centre on May 1.

“The students have been practicing for months and are excited to be on the field at the Rogers Centre performing for their family, friends and the fans,” says Linda Pierce, principal at Applewood. “The opportunity for students to perform at the Blue Jays game supports Applewood School's mission of striving towards independence with dignity in the community."

At 6:56 p.m., two students will sing the O Canada and Star-Spangled Banner, while students and staff sign the words with a dramatized form of American Sign Language. During the performance, four students in wheelchairs will gather on the field to create a mobile formation of the Canadian flag.

Applewood is a secondary school for students with developmental disabilities. This is the ninth year students from Applewood have performed at the Rogers Centre and the sixth year the school has collaborated with Stephen Lewis Secondary School.
