Yashan Chelliahpillai, student at Glenforest Secondary School placed 1st overall at the University of Waterloo's 49th annual worldwide Chem 13 News Exam for earning the highest score in addition to  demonstrating academic excellence.

It was no surprise to Glenforest teacher, Mr. Diljohn, when Chelliahpillai signed up for the competition after encouraging his class to participate. Inside the classroom, Chelliahpillai excels in math, biology, chemistry and physics, which also happens to be his favourite subjects. Outside of the classroom, he volunteers at the Credit Valley Hospital and is also an active member in the school's neuroscience, math, computer science, chess, HOSA and Schoolreach trivia club.

Chelliahpillai has participated successfully in a variety of competitions throughout his high school experience, including coming in 21st place across Canada in the National Biology competition in 2018 and earning 1st place in the Medical Spelling category at HOSA Canada's Spring Leadership Conference in 2017.
