Students from Kingswood Drive Public School found inspiration a little over year ago, having read a news story about a "Buddy Bench". The idea behind the bench is to give a place for students who are looking to find a friend to sit, signaling an invitation for others to come and play.
Student government in collaboration with clubs, such as ECO kids, hosted fundraisers to buy the school a bench of its own. Members of student government presented the project to school council, who offered to match each dollar of their fundraising efforts. The school community managed to raise over $1,300 to install the new bench.
Staff and over 700 students at Kingswood Drive public school will form a human rainbow and sing O Canada to inaugurate their new Buddy Bench on April 10. The day coincides with the Peel District School Board's Day of Pink, a day in celebration of LGBT rights and diversity.
