Sandalwood Heights student receives Lincoln M. Alexander Award
Sandalwood Heights Secondary School student Ashmandeep Khroad received the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration's Lincoln M. Alexander Award for her outstanding leadership in improving racial understanding. The Lincoln M. Alexander Awards are presented annually to three Ontarians between the ages of 16 and 25 for their efforts to end racial discrimination in their schools and communities.
Khroad advocates for equality between different ethnicities at Sandalwood Heights. As the president of the Multicultural Club, she introduced Culture-Fest, an event to celebrate the other nine cultures represented at her high school. Khroad promotes cultural awareness by organizing multicultural celebrations such as Chinese New Year, Diwali and Vaisakhi, and leads the Asian Heritage Month events. She was the first non-African student to sign up for the African Heritage Club to motivate her peers to promote diversity, by joining the club and learning about the contributions of people of African descent.
The awards will be presented during a ceremony at Queen's Park on Dec. 14.
