On Nov. 21, female secondary school students from the Peel District School Board are invited to attend Sharing Our Journeys—Planning for Success: A Young Women’s Leadership Conference at the HJA Brown Education Centre in Mississauga. Students will have the opportunity to build on their leadership skills, and strengthen connections between their own creative inspiration and career paths.
“This event provides a unique opportunity for students to meet, network and be mentored by successful women leaders who work in different careers and who are committed to mentorship,” says Harpreet Kaur Neelam, instructional coordinator at the Peel board and event organizer. “In partnership with community members, we encourage young girls to learn more about the career pathways that interest them as well as obtain information to consider new and exciting options.”
The day will include several panel discussions, workshops and networking sessions with women from a variety of different careers. Opening remarks from the Peel board will be brought by Trustee Suzanne Nurse and Superintendent of Education Poleen Grewal. Premier Kathleen Wynne will address students through a video message.
The event is run in partnership with Asian Canadian Educators and Employee Network, Antiracist Multicultural Educators’ Network of Ontario, Making My Way, Ontario Youth Apprentice Program, Sikh Feminist Research Institute and the Peel board’s We Welcome the World Centres. This collaboration between the Peel board and community partners believes in gender equity and creating forums, such as this conference, where young women are inspired by positive women role models.
Sharing Our Journeys runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the HJA Brown Education, located at 5650 Hurontario St. in Mississauga.
