On Friday, Nov. 1, Peel District School Board staff visited the Hindu Heritage Centre in Mississauga to learn more about the Hindu holiday of Diwali.
Diwali, the festival of lights, extends over five days and is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs. Houses, shops and public places are decorated with small earthenware oil lamps called diyas. These lamps are placed in rows in windows, doors and outside buildings.
The students and staff of the Peel board represent a rich diversity of faith traditions. Understanding and embracing the wide diversity of faiths and cultures is the vision of a series of Peel board programs and resources entitled Faith Forward.
