New schools, Tony Pontes and Whaley’s Corners public schools, celebrate their official openings

​This school year, Tony Pontes and Whaley's Corners public schools opened their doors to students, staff and community members. Now, they will be celebrating their official openings to celebrate a successful first year. Families, staff and community members are invited to attend the celebrations.

Tony Pontes Public School

Located in the Town of Caledon, students and staff at Tony Pontes Public School will celebrate the official opening of their new school with a special visit from the school's namesake and former Director of Education Tony Pontes on May 9 at 6 p.m.

At the open house, guests will participate in the school's guided tours of the school, capture the school's milestone at the photo booth, hear from guest speakers, and view student creations and student performances.

Guests will also have the opportunity to partake in the school-wide community art project. Every student and staff at the school has created a ceramic tile in the shape a wolf's head which symbolizes the school's mascot, the Tony Pontes Wolfpack. All of the tiles will be combined into a series of art installations. Attendees will be invited to glaze a wolf to add to the project which will be displayed at the school.

  • Stan Cameron, chair of the board
  • Peter Joshua, director of education
  • Tony Pontes, former director of education and school namesake
  • Allan Thompson, mayor of Caledon

Agenda:

  • 5 p.m. – Reception and dinner for staff and special guests
  • 6 p.m. – Open house for families and invited guests, including tours of the school, a community art project, photo booth and student presentations of their LAUNCH design projects in response to real world issues 
  • 7 p.m. – Opening ceremonies, including guest speakers, plaque presentation and student performances, including dance, choir and a special video presentation

Tony Pontes is Caledon's first balanced calendar school and one of three across the Peel board.

Whaley's Corners Public School

Located in the City of Brampton, student and staff at Whaley's Corners Public School are looking forward to celebrating its grand opening on May 15 at 6 p.m. Amongst the attendees will be Ken Whaley, a member of the Whaley's family.

At the event, guests will enjoy an evening of family fun. They will have an opportunity to take part in a formal ceremony, the unveiling of student commemorative artwork, enjoy a bouncy castle, a video presentation and a student choir performance. Snacks and refreshments will also be available for purchase.
