Peel board students, staff honour Remembrance Day with special assemblies

Students and staff across the Peel District School Board will recognize Remembrance Day on Nov. 9 with assemblies, events and various activities to honour Canadian heroes. Staff at the HJA Brown Education Centre will hold a reception to celebrate heroes and honour those who are still fighting.

“Students and staff from various schools and locations gather every year for Remembrance Day ceremonies,” says Tony Pontes, director of education. “It’s important to pay tribute to those who fought for our freedom and equally important to recognize and honour the men and women who are still serving our country today.”

In Mississauga, Lieutenant Commander Albert Wong will be a guest speaker at Glenforest Secondary School. He will spend the morning sharing his experiences as a Canadian Forces officer specializing in public affairs for over 35 years. Students will attend one of three ceremonies in the school auditorium.

Queen Street Public School in Brampton will hold an assembly for all students and their families. Grade 5 students will read poetry and perform a song at the assembly. Students will then complete obstacle courses that re-enact war scenarios. Grade 4 classes are writing letters to veterans and making poppies.

Herb Campbell Public School in Caledon will hold an assembly that will include music, wreath laying and words of gratitude to past and present soldiers.

Peel board staff will gather at the HJA Brown Education Centre in Mississauga for a Remembrance Day tribute beginning at 10:15 a.m. on Nov. 9. The event features readings by Peel board employees and performances by students from Garthwood Park Public School and Cawthra Park and Mayfield secondary schools.

Glenforest Secondary School is located at 3575 Fieldgate Drive in Mississauga. Queen Street Public School is located at 20 Academic Drive in Brampton. Herb Campbell Public School is located at 3749 King Street  in Caledon. The HJA Brown Education Centre is located at 5650 Hurontario Street in Mississauga.
