For grade 8 students, the transition to high school starts this fall

Grade 8 information nights start soon, visit www.peelschools.org/schools/informationnights

Peel District School Board high schools will host information nights this fall and winter so parents and students can learn more about programs, see the facilities and ask questions. A full list of secondary school information nights is available at www.peelschools.org/schools/informationnights.

“I vividly remember attending the grade 8 information night for Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School,” says Linda Bui, Fletcher’s Meadow student and student trustee. “It was a chance for me to check out the school with my parents and for all of us to learn about the different programs and activities they offer. My parents got their questions answered too. I was the first in my family to reach secondary school, so it was a big deal for them.”

Attending the information night is one way parents and their teens can prepare for the transition to secondary school. The Peel board also provides a Ready? Set? High School! Parent’s Guide to every grade 8 parent. The guide will go home with term two report cards. Parents can also access the guide now at www.peelschools.org in the ‘Parents’ section by clicking on ‘Help your child’. For students, secondary schools provide opportunities to visit and interact with high school students throughout the year.

“The idea for the parent’s guide came from our Parent Involvement Committee,” says Scott Moreash, coordinating superintendent of education. “High school is a big transition for students, and in many cases, an even bigger transition for their parents. We want to provide parents with as much information as possible to help them understand high school life. We know parent involvement is one of the top indicators of student success, so it’s important to us to involve parents early—before high school starts—so they know what to expect and can be part of the experience with their teen.”

Parents can stay connected by subscribing to receive updates from secondary school websites. To find out which school their teen will attend, parents should visit www.peelschools.org and click on ‘Find your school’.
