Peel board offers unique programs to students
Parents with children starting grade 6 or 7 in September will have the chance to learn more about regional programs offered in Peel middle schools during information meetings taking place in January and February. At the meetings, parents will learn about the programs, get an opportunity to ask questions and meet some of the staff. They will also be able to talk to students who are currently in the program and their parents.
"Regional programs offered by the Peel District School Board will provide students with a variety of choices," says Jim Grieve, director of education. "The programs empower students by providing an opportunity to develop and explore their skills in a particular area of interest."
The QE Arts program at Queen Elizabeth Sr. Public School in Mississauga provides grades 7 and 8 students the chance to explore their creativity through a challenging and integrated arts curriculum. The two-year program offers many opportunities for students to develop creative skills in four areas of performance – dance, drama, visual arts and music (band or strings). Peel students living south of highway 401 and who are currently in grade 6 can apply for the program.
Earnscliffe Sr. Public School in Brampton offers a three-year integrated arts program, similar to QE Arts. E-Arts at Earnscliffe Sr. is for grade 6, 7 and 8 students living north of highway 401. Students who are currently in grade 5 can apply to the program. Prior arts training and experience are not required.
Allan A. Martin Senior Public School's International Business and Technology (IBT) program provides a challenging curriculum in all academic areas. The IBT program builds on the traditional grade 7 and 8 curriculum to prepare students for an increasingly global and technologically literate community.
The three-year SciTech program at Tomken Road Middle School in Mississauga is the board's only middle school science and technology program. It is offered to students in grades 6 to 8.
For Peel students who are entering grade 7, the new International Baccalaureate (IB) program at W.G. Davis Senior Public School offers a learning environment that connects students to the world outside the classroom. The IB program is a four-year program. For grade 9 and 10, students will move to Turner Fenton Secondary School in Brampton.
