Streetsville Secondary School receives accolades for safety

Streetsville Secondary School in Mississauga is keeping safe. Streetsville received the Safe School Award from the Canadian Safe Schools Network at the Mayor's Youth Advisory Committee Awards night held on May 10. Three students also received individual recognition from MYAC for their contribution to building a safer community.

"These awards recognize the efforts of Streetsville students in creating programs and organizing assemblies that encourage the school to be proactive on issues of non-violence," says Terry Hamm, principal at Streetsville. "We're proud of our students for taking ownership at initiating programs that make their school a better learning environment."

Existing programs at the school have allowed students to remain actively involved in events with themes focusing on non-violence. These include fundraising through the SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) program and CRASH (Conflict Resolution at Streetsville High) program. Students also arranged assemblies, including one dealing with anti-male violence to highlight the Anti-Male Violence Walk held in Toronto.

For its collective efforts, Streetsville received a plaque from the Canadian Safe Schools Network. Three students received individual plaques honouring their on-going work in the school and community, especially in anti-violence programs. Individual students recognized by MYAC include Crystal Peralta, Ami Shah and Gabriel Tsang. All three are OAC students also actively involved in their school's student government.

Streetsville Secondary School is located at 72 Joymar Drive.
