Peel board students receive OSSTF Marion Drysdale Award
 
The board congratulated the secondary students listed below for receiving the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation 2013 Marion Drysdale Award for their artistic and creative talents. Trustees also recognized the students’ teachers for their encouragement and support of these talented students in the development of their award-winning submissions.

Board approves rescission of secondary student transportation eligibility distance resolution

Trustees approved the rescission of Resolution No. 11-120 pertaining to transportation eligibility distances for grade 9 to 12 students. Resolution No. 11-120 stated, “Resolved that, as recommended by the Joint Ad Hoc Transportation Committee, subject to budget review, the transportation eligibility distances for Grades 9-12 be harmonized at 3.8 km as of the 2013-14 school year.”

At the Regular Meeting of the Board on Feb. 26, 2013, the board received Notice to Rescind Resolution No. 11-120, which was approved at the March 8, 2011, Regular Meeting of the Board. The Resolution was a recommendation of the Joint Ad Hoc Transportation Committee, and was “subject to budget review.”

Peel board approves new Voluntary, Confidential Self-Identification Policy for First Nation, Métis, Inuit Students

Trustees approved Policy #81 – Voluntary, Confidential Self-Identification Policy for First Nation, Métis and Inuit Students, as required by the Ministry of Education. Information collected through self-identification will be confidential and will be used only for the purpose of providing it for the ministry. The ministry will use the information to develop curriculum that will reflect students’ heritage.
Policy #81 was developed with input from the First Nation, Metis and Inuit Education Advisory Circle and through community consultations. The policy takes effect Sept. 2013. At that time, flyers regarding self-identification will be circulated to students and families, and, in future, as students register. The policy will be posted at
www.peelschools.org/trustees/boardpolicies.
