Are you thinking of registering your child for French immersion (FI)? For the 2013-14 school year, parents must register children for entry into grade 1 FI or grade 7 extended French (EF) by Friday, Jan. 25, 2013. Students will have access to busing if their home address is within the Peel District School Board’s established transportation eligibility distances.
“The registration date will help determine the number of grade 1 and 7 FI and EF classes at each school for the 2013-14 school year,” says Shawn Moynihan, superintendent of curriculum and instruction support services.. “The January deadline helps the board hire the appropriate number of qualified staff it will need, and helps reduce the level of student disruption in September since no new FI classes will likely be created at re-organization time.”
A lottery system will be used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. All students who make the registration deadline will be assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.
Students who currently (2012-13) have siblings in the elementary FI program (grades 1 to 7) will not be included in the lottery. In order to be automatically accepted into the grade 1 FI program, however, these students must register by the deadline.
The grandparenting of siblings applies only to families who currently (2012-13) have children in the elementary FI program (grades 1 to 7). This means that younger siblings of students who are accepted into grade 1 FI for the 2013-14 school year and who don’t currently have siblings in the FI program (i.e. in grades 1 to 7 as of Sept. 2012) will participate in the lottery system in future years.
Students who are currently in Kindergarten FI in other school boards and register by the deadline will be automatically accepted into the grade 1 FI program. They will not be included in the lottery.
Registration for FI for the 2013-14 school year started on Nov. 30, 2012. The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 25, 2013. Parents should register directly at the FI school their child would attend.
