Cost of French immersion
French immersion is an optional program beginning in grade 1 and continuing through the end of high school. In this program, students achieve a high level of proficiency in French while maintaining and developing English language skills. The program is open to all students and is designed for students for whom French is a second language. Students can enter the program either in grade 1 (early French immersion) or in grade 7 (extended French).
In grade 1, students spend 90 per cent of their school time learning in French. From grades 2 to 8, they spend half of their school day learning in French and the other half learning in English.
In high school, students in the early immersion program earn 10 credits in French - four in immersion French and six in other subjects that are taught in French. Students in extended immersion programs earn seven credits in French - four in immersion French and three in other subjects that are taught in French.

Cost of French immersion program
- The budget to schools for teachers, instructional supplies and equipment for French immersion is exactly the same as for the regular school program.
- In elementary school, busing service for French immersion students costs the Peel board approximately $1.4 million more per year.
- The Peel board does not provide busing for French immersion at the secondary school level.
