Full-day kindergarten
I’m a big kid now—full-day kindergarten here I come!
Full-day kindergarten helps young students learn, grow
Through instruction and play-based learning, children in full-day kindergarten develop socially and emotionally through interaction with their peers and the adults who teach and guide them. They also develop their capacity in language and mathematics, and engage in healthy physical activities and the arts. A new curriculum, based largely on the current kindergarten program, is being used in full-day classrooms.
As part of the full-day program, certified teachers and registered early childhood educators work together to help young students learn and grow during the regular school day. Families can also choose to register their children for optional student programs held before and after the regular school day.
The ministry's goal is to have the program fully implemented in all publicly-funded schools in the province by 2014.
Only families living within the boundary of any of the above schools can register children in the full-day program through the school's kindergarten registration process. Flexible boundary applications to access the program will not be approved.
Program has “powerful impact on learning” but board cannot overrun budget, says chair
Peel District School Board trustees have approved the implementation of full-day early learning kindergarten programs for year four (2013-14) in 46 schools and 49 schools for year five (2014-15), contingent on final approval by the Ministry of Education and the receipt of capital funding provided by the ministry. With these additional sites, and subject to the five conditions of compliance, all Peel board kindergarten students will be in full-day kindergarten programs by 2014-15.
How were the schools selected?
Selection was based on:
- available space
- community need using Social Risk Index data
- impact on existing local child care
- student achievement
- readiness to implement
Extended day programs
All extended day programs in schools with full-day kindergarten programs are run by licensed third party providers. The optional extended day component will be led by early childhood educators. If you choose to enrol your child in the program, you will pay a fee.
A list of approved extended day programs for the 2012-13 school year is now available. Parents/guardians will be asked to indicate their interest in the program at registration. Programs can only run if there is sufficient interest among families.
