Transfer Course

We have received many questions about the Transfer courses.
Just what are they? Here is a detailed explanation:

What are Transfer Courses?

Transfer courses are half and quarter credit courses that cover expectations missed when transferring from one type of course in a particular subject to another.

Why Would I Take a Transfer Course?

All courses are designed around expectations. If you follow one path, the expectations build on each other. If you change course paths (i.e. from Applied to Academic or from University to College) you will miss key expectations required for the new path course.

How Do I Know If I Need A Transfer?

The best way to find out is to talk with your guidance counsellor. You can also find all of the prerequisites for Grade 11 and 12 courses in the curriculum policy documents for the various disciplines.

What If There Is No Transfer Course?

Where the subject matter or scope of a course is too great to be covered in a partial credit course, no transfer course exists. Where no transfer course exists, students are required to complete the designated prerequisite for the course that they wish to take in the next grade. Transfer courses are not provided for every pairing of courses of different types in the same subject and grade that may exist across the curriculum. In some instances, the subject matter or scope of the two courses may differ too much for the gap between the courses to be bridged by a partial credit transfer course. In other instances, a transfer course may not be required because more than one course will serve as a prerequisite for the course in the next grade that the student wishes to take.

Do I Get Credit for the Transfer Course?

Transfer courses provide partial credits (0.25 or 0.5 credit).  The credits earned through the successful completion of a transfer course will count as optional credits towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements.
(See OSS, section 4.3.5.)

Course Codes

The course code for a transfer course is structured as follows:

• the first three characters identify the subject area,
• the fourth character identifies the grade,
• the fifth character identifies the type of course from which the expectations of the transfer course are derived. The meaning of the fifth character of a transfer course code :

    • H: Academic
    • J: Applied
    • K: University Preparation
    • L: University/College Preparation
    • Q or R: College Preparation
    • S: Workplace Preparation
    • The sixth code (Z) identifies the credit as being online delivery.
