Counting on You
What is taught?
The focus is on reading, writing and mathematics. Students may seek help to overcome difficulties with concepts taught during the regular school day. This may also include assignments and homework, in any subject.
Program Goals
Our program goals are to:
- improve student literacy and math
- improve learning skills, such as regular homework completion
- increase self-esteem, motivation and improve student confidence.
The program allows parents to become partners in building their child’s study skills and interest in learning
Who is eligible to attend?
Only students registered in the Peel District School Board may attend Counting on You. Students who qualify for Counting on You:
- are in grades 7 to 10 with marks below 70 per cent
- achieve level two or below in math, language or in any other subject
- struggled or did not pass the grade 6, 9 or 10 EQAO tests
- must be referred by a teacher, guidance counsellor or administrator
- agree to regularly attend extra classes after school with good behaviour
How is the program organized?
Every school with grades 7 and 8 or grades 9 and 10 has the option of running a Counting on You program. The program varies from school to school according to need. With a maximum of 15 students, the classes are smaller than those in the regular day school, therefore providing more personalized instruction.
In addition to dynamic lessons based on the regular curriculum and help with homework and assignments, the program may include physical activities and a snack break. Typically, the program takes place after school, twice a week, and runs about two hours per session. There is no homework assigned from the program.
You must contact your child’s school to learn if their school offers the program and when it is taught.
When do classes take place?
The classes take place during the regular school year. Parents will be advised of the start and end dates.
How do students register?
Students are recommended by their home room teacher or guidance counsellor, who can provide additional information on registration. Registration is free.
Is transportation provided?
No transportation is provided for the program. Parents are responsible for providing transportation to and from the school.
