Welcome
Learning English is the important first step to success in your new country. The Peel District School Board offers English as a Second Language (ESL) programs for newcomers to Canada whose first language (or mother tongue) is not English. The goal is to strengthen listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. For more information contact the Adult Education Centres. For Mississauga call (905)270-6000 x 400 and for Brampton call (905)791-6700 x 2.
ESL classes are offered year round. Language for Life, from beginner to advanced levels, integrates all four skill areas into each lesson. In addition, we offer a number of remedial/specialized programs:
- Listening and Speaking (beginner to advanced)
- Reading and Writing (beginner to advanced)
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), which is used by Canadian universities and professional licensing bodies to establish proficiency in English
- Co-op with volunteer workplace experience in Accounting Basics, Business English and Customer Service skills
- MicroSoft Word and Office
You may view the course descriptions by going to the Courses drop down.
Individuals registering for ESL courses must show documentation indicating their status in Canada. Click here to see complete requirements.
Day and night classes are offered in 10-week sessions. Weekend classes are intensive eight-week sessions. As enrolment is limited, sometimes a space may not be immediately available. And, from time to time the minimum enrolment required for a class is not reached and so the course will not be offered during the upcoming session.
Child supervision is available during the day for children 3 to 5 years of age at the Mississauga location only. Parents must be on site attending classes. Childcare spaces are limited.
Our sites are wheelchair accessible.
The Peel District School Board also offers the Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program. In contrast to those who must learn English as a second language, the students who attend LBS have English as a first language but require help to improve their reading and writing skills. For more information about this program, visit LBS or contact us at 905-791-6700, ext 6401.
