English Assessment
- The purpose of this assessment is to gather information about you as a reader and writer so that we can recommend the proper placement in an English course to ensure the best opportunity for your success.
For the English assessment, no prior preparation is required. However, review of essay structure may be helpful.
There are two mandatory parts to the assessment and you will have approximately 90 minutes to complete these two parts:
- Part I requires you to answer 10 questions after reading a two to three page article.
- Part II requires you to write a short essay.
There is a third part that must be completed if you are planning to take an English university preparatory course (i.e. ENG 3U or 4U) and you will have approximately 45 minutes to complete this part:
- Part III requires you to analyze a quotation and relate it to personal experience and the article you read for Part I.
The assessor will be looking for the following:
- How well you present your ideas in a clear and organized way?
- How well you use appropriate vocabulary and sentence variety?
- How well you use standard spelling, punctuation and grammar?
Math Assessment
For the Math assessment, a review of the math concepts is strongly recommended. We suggest that you:
- review the sample questions available from a counsellor.
- look up the different Math concepts on the internet.
- explore Purple Math, as many learners have found it be helpful.
- if you would like to take a class that will strengthen your basic math skills before taking the Math Credit Assessment, explore our Literacy and Basic Skills program (LBS) or call David Slack at 905-791-6700 ext. 6401.
The multiple-choice math assessment has three sections and you will be given approximately 30 minutes to complete each section.
NOTE: Calculators are not allowed.
