Our historyMalton was first established in 1820 by settlers from England. One of the first settlers, Richard Halliday, named the village Malton, after his birthplace in Yorkshire, England. The village of Malton was rich in fertile farmland and the main industry was raising cattle and grain. When the Grand Trunk Railroad was completed in 1959, Malton became a major centre for grain handling and export, although this period of economic prosperity was short-lived.
In 1937, 13 farms close to Malton were selected as the site of a new airport. The completion of the airport led to a population explosion, attracting people from all over the world to the Malton community. New businesses flourished and Malton’s economic focus shifted from agriculture to industry. In the post-war years, Malton gained an international reputation as a leader in aeronautical design and manufacturing and became the home of the famous airplane, the Avro Arrow. In 1968, several local villages, including Malton, amalgamated to become the Town of Mississauga. |
