Understanding the Early Years — Malton
Text Box: Early Development Instrument (EDI)
The EDI is a questionnaire completed by teachers. All kindergarten teachers in Malton public schools are asked to complete this questionnaire for each child in their classes. The EDI measures early development (before grade one) in the following areas:
physical health and well-being
emotional health and maturity
social knowledge and competence
language development and thinking skills
communication skills and general knowledge

The EDI is not a tool for evaluating the abilities of individual children and the results of the EDI are never used for this purpose.

What does the EDI tell us?
The EDI helps us to evaluate the ability of our children to:
meet learning expectations in a classroom and school environment
benefit from educational activities at school
interact with and get along with others

The data that we gather about children in Malton is compared with similar data provided by other UEY communities. By comparing the school readiness of our children with other children in Canada, we get a much clearer picture of early childhood development in our community. The EDI also helps us to understand how the different economic, social, and physical characteristics of Malton neighbourhoods influence the school readiness of our children.
