More About Understanding the Early Years Malton |

How will this project help our children? We know that children achieve their best when they have loving, supportive relationships and live in safe, healthy neighbourhoods. By gathering information about the children, families and neighbourhoods in Malton, we can identify the diverse needs of our community. We can also use this information to improve our community so that our children have the best opportunities to thrive grow and learn.
Guiding principles of the UEY initiativeÖ child-focused and family-centred Ö neighbourhood-based and community-driven Ö inclusive - respect equity and diversity Ö promote partnerships and collaboration at the grass roots level Ö provide universal access to information and resources Ö support prevention and early intervention
How will the information be gathered?Ö Documenting our community resources, identifying our community strengths and highlighting the areas that need improvement. A community asset mapping study will take a detailed look at the four main neighbourhoods in Malton. This study will provide important information about the facilities, resources and socio-economic characteristics of each neighbourhood. Ö Measuring how ready our children are to learn when they start school. Teachers of senior kindergarten children will complete a survey known as an Early Development Instrument (EDI). Ö Gathering information from parents about their children and families. Parents will complete two surveys. One is called the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY) and the other is the Parent Interviews and Direct Assessments of Children Survey (PIDACS). Ö Holding focus groups with community members to learn more about the Malton community and to discuss ways to improve local programs and services. Ö Creating a Program Inventory that lists all of the services, programs and resources in the Malton community.
